Mungret Regional U12 Girls Win The U12 Cup

Mungret superb in U12 girls cup final victory away to Kilmallock
Mungret Regional met Kilmallock in the girls U12 cup final on Friday evening 25th May in Kilmallock.
Mungret took the match to the home team from the kick off with Rebecca Curran prominent in midfield. Sarah Prendergast and Sophie Carey both tested the Kilmallock keeper in the opening minutes and then with 5 minutes on the clock Sophie Carey won possession on the edge of the penalty area and beat the centre half before scoring from close range to give the visitors an early lead.
The visitors continued to dominate the first half, Lucy Murphy and Sophie Lynch Morata were a constant threat on either wing as Mungret went in search of a second goal however the Kilmallock defence were resilient with their goalkeeper performing well to keep Mungret attack at bay.
The home team were beginning to win more possession in midfield and twice in quick succession penetrated the Mungret defence but goalkeeper Alannah O'Neill was quick off her line to gather the ball and deny the Kilmallock striker. The visitors defence of Aisling Newman, Katelyn Cunningham and Sarah Buston were performing well and creating the platform for the midfield to press the home defence. Lucy Murphy won possession on the right wing and crossed the ball in to the penalty area but the ball just evaded the in rushing Sarah Prendergast and went wide, Sophie Lynch Morata, Rebecca Curran and Sophie Carey all had shots off target before the referee blew the whistle for half time.
Half time score 1:0 Mungret.
Mungret started the second half as they had finished the first pressing the home defence in search of the second goal with substitute Nicole Nix firing in 2 shots in quick succession to test the outstanding Kilmallock goalkeeper.
With 15 minutes left on the clock Mungret eventually scored the elusive second goal following good attacking interplay between Rebecca, Nicole. Nicole Nix struck the post with a shot and as the home defence failed to clear the ball Aoibhe Gardiner reacted first to stroke the ball past the Kilmallock goalkeeper.
With time running out Nicole Nix swung the ball across the face of the Kilmallock goal and Sarah Prendergast scored at the back post from close range only for the referee to disallow the goal for offside.
Moments later the referee blew the whistle for full time amidst scenes of great excitement as the girls celebrated a thoroughly deserved victory and shortly afterwards Limerick County fixtures secretary Pat Dunne presented the cup to winning captain Sarah Prendergast.
